How to get cell phone service for free.

Say what? Yes, you can really get free cell phone service. If you are on SSI, Foodstamps and certain other government services you are eligible for a free cell phone with 350 minutes per month and unlimited texts but minimal data. $15 per month gets you unlimited talk and text. You have to sign up at

This sounds great, and for many people it will be, but if you are blind or have low vision you will be out of luck because the phones are not accessible. You can, however, bring your own phone to Safelink. If you have vision loss you'll want to sweet talk one of your friends out of an older iPhone 4S or higher. If you don't have any vision issues, you can use any Android phone or iPhone. You can use a phone you already own on the Safelink service. If you "bring your own phone" you get 350 min and 500MB of data per month. That is the amount of data I use in a month. Below is a list of other services which are low cost.

Redpocket mobile has plans from $10 per month expensive. The low-end price point is $30 for unlimited talk and text and 500 megabytes of data. The price includes all taxes and fees. There is also a one year card for aprox $200 which will get you 1000 voice minutes, 1000 texts and 1000MB of data almost (one gigabyte) per month. I have friends who use Redpocket and really like it. This service sells iPhones starting at $80 for the 4S, and various Android phones. If you already own a Sprint phone, this is the service for you.

Puretalk USA is a service I chose for my daughter. It uses the ATT network and phones and they have plans from $5. The unlimited talk, text and 200MB of data for $24/mo including tax, You can add 1GB of data for an additional $5.

Cricket Wireless is another service I have used. It is owned by ATT and has service fem $30/mo for unlimited talk, text and 1GB of high speed data including all taxes and fees. Also, Cricket has some free and low cost phones. Remember, if you are blind the iPhone is the right phone for you. All others will be nothing but a huge frustration.

MetroPCS- is a service owned by T-mobile. They have free phones, which are quite nice, and service of unlimited talk and text plus 1GB of high speed data and unlimited slower speed data for $30 per month including all taxes and fees.

There are lots of other services, but I've only outlined the ones I have personally tried.
